Shortbus, sex and characters

It’s basically about a group of characters who converge in New York, more specifically in the artistic/sexual salon called Shortbus. According to Mitchell, the film attempts to “employ sex in new cinematic ways because it’s too interesting to leave to porn.”

The central character is Sofia Lin, a couples therapist who, ironically enough, has never had an orgasm. Thanks to the influence of new clients and other characters, she will be able to find her way to enjoying sex…

This movie is one of the (too) few films that mix sex and life. The sex is completely integrated with the characters’ lives. The film was premiered at the Festival de Cannes in 2006 and received great reviews.

Interesting facts:

– Tristan Taormino, a sex columnist and porn film director (among others, her series of very educational “Expert Guide” films) has participated in the orgy scene.

– In the film they talk about a vibrating egg called In the Realm of the Senses. This is a wink to the explicit 1976 Nagisa Oshima film of the same name in which a man urges his lover to insert a hard-boiled egg in her vagina and “lay it”.

  1. […] I’ve already talked to you about Shortbus, and I won’t repeat how much I love this film. No, today, I want you to really think about the meaning of this video, its philosophical value and its deep sense of sensuality. Think about it, it’s three gay men having sex together and just singing into each other’s dick and anus. […]

  2. […] This intense and beautiful video was directed by Alma Har’el, and belongs to the Valtari Mystery Film Experiment, launched by Sigur Rós. The band gave their chance to a dozen film makers, with the same modest budget, to create whatever came to their mind when listening to their album Valtari. The filmmakers inclue Ramin Bahrani and John Cameron Mitchell. […]
